Learn to grow your own food

Growing your own food is easy, fun and good for your health as well as your budget.

When you grow your own food it is fresh, seasonal and highly nutritious. By growing food you will also help reduce greenhouse gas pollution that occurs from processing and transporting food long distances.

If you would like to learn how to grow your own food then come along to a short beginner’s gardening course to be held in Queanbeyan:

WHEN: Sunday, 26 September 2010, from 1.30 pm – 4.30 pm

WHERE: Railway Park Community Garden, Henderson Rd, Queanbeyan

COST: $20 (paid in cash on the day)

To attend you need to book a place by telephoning 6284 4113.

Keith Colls, the president of the Canberra Organic Growers Society, (COGS) will conduct the course. You will learn basic skills including how to sow seeds and transplant seedlings. At the end of the course you will be ready to grow some of your own food. If you have a garden, bring along a soil sample.

This course is being organised as part of the Queanbeyan City Sustainability Initiative (QUEST) Living Lightly series of activities and events. To find out more about QUEST, contact the convenor at 14 McKeahnie St, Queanbeyan or phone 6284 4113.

Wamboin community spirit

When a couple of Wamboin residents needed help, the community responded in force!

A couple of longstanding and loved Wamboin residents have had a hard time over the last few years. Both have been affected by illness and failing health that will soon, unfortunately, see them leave the magnificent home and garden they built in Wamboin.

Both have been active in the fire brigade, golf club and community association. The garden that they put many years of backbreaking work into needed a minor clean up as some of the natives had died or fallen over. When one of the locals suggested a working bee to “tidy up”, it didn’t take long for word to spread. An email was sent to “regular” community participants and within 2 days we had more than 30 starters for the following Sunday. Catering for morning tea and a BBQ lunch was organized immediately. Sunday came along quickly. Trucks, trailers, utes barrows etc were soon carting branches to the already burning bonfire and the buzz of chainsaws broke the silence of a normally quiet midmorning Sunday. Charlie’s bogged truck was no deterrent and added to the fun of the day.

Within a couple of hours, we had cleaned up most of the dead timber and stood around the warm fire to enjoy morning tea with Anzacs, cakes and other delicacies cooked by some of the group. Despite a local shower, we all returned for a final clean up and then enjoyed a BBQ followed by a glass of red donated by Lamberts Vineyard.

No one deserves special mention as we all did something special.

We drove home with a great deal of pride from what we had accomplished in only a couple of hours. This is why we all live here. The Wamboin community spirit still lives on!
