Helpful Hints for Rural Living
Booms and Bangs
The military have a firing range off Sutton Road. At times these explosions sound very close. If a problem, call the Duty Officer, RMC Duntroon on 6265 9408.
Dogs
Wandering dogs have caused, and will cause, trouble. Please keep your dogs under control. Straying dogs probably cause more friction among neighbours in a rural area than any other problem.
Elections
We have our own polling booth at the Community Hall in Bingley Way for Federal, State and Council elections. Easy parking and no queues.
Electricity
If you have problems with electricity check your fuses/ circuit breakers before calling Country Energy on 132080.
Fires
Do not burn copper treated wood. The fumes are noxious.
Check Brigade regulations before lighting any fires outside.
Notify the Brigade Captain, and neighbours, before burning off.
Have someone else assisting when burning rubbish.
Ensure fires are extinguished before leaving.
Fruit
The parrots, currawongs, wood ducks and cockatoos can make short work of all fruit and berries. Netting is a must if you plan to harvest.
Lightning
Wamboin is a lightning strike prone area. If there is a storm, use only a cordless phone, disconnect modems and faxes, care for your dogs.
Mail Box
Help the postie and ensure your mail box is positioned correctly. Check this by trying, as a driver, to deliver a letter to your box. Your Rural Address number indicates the distance (in tens of meters) from an intersection.
Notice Boards
There are several notice boards throughout the area. These are for short term, non-commercial, chalked messages. Use with consideration to other users and clean off when your notice has expired. To achieve a degree of tidiness the boards are cleaned early each week.
Poultry
There are many foxes in the area. Ensure poultry is adequately protected.
Recycling
The council maintains a Recycling Station near the roadway fence at the Bingley Way Community Centre. Please obey the recycling rules.
Rubbish
There are two free tips. One off Macs Reef Road and one east of Bungendore. You will need a tip pass which is available from Palerang Council. Macs Reef tip hours 7:30am to 5:00pm Fri-Sat-Sun-Mon (to 7:00pm Sat-Sun in Eastern Summer Time). The Whisper will show variations if these times change. Commercial rubbish collection from your residence or gate can be arranged by contacting David O'Sullivan on 6230 3548.
School Buses
Deane's Bus Line provides the majority of school bus services. Contact them on 6299 3722.
Speed Limits
The general speed limit of 80 (60 in parts) is designed for residents' safety. Please observe these restrictions.
